If you are a loukoumi fan, there is one place on the island you should head to for an authentic Cypriot taste and that is Geroskipou. With a long history of loukoumi making, this village takes pride in its sweet dessert and what better way to honour it than a two-day festival?
As September arrives, the Folklore Association Aphrodite Geroskipou puts together a cultural tribute to its loukoumi, sharing flavours, entertainment and also little-known truths about its delicacy.
“Did you know that Geroskipou loukoumi is more than just a sweet?,” they ask. “Discover little secrets and big truths about Cyprus’ most authentic traditional product at the Geroskipou Loukoumi Festival, taking place on September 26 and 28 at Geroskipou Square.”
Through a fun-filled agenda, the festival will share all kinds of loukoumi secrets, and in a specially-transformed festival ground, visitors will get to enjoy Cypriot coffee brewed on hot sand like it is traditionally made and, of course taste loukoumi in its finest form.
The entertainment programme will feature traditional dances, live music, tastings and workshops for children and adults. Exhibitions and cultural activities will also be on, sharing more insights on this Cypriot delicacy so special to the island’s cultural heritage that it was inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
