The Larnaca district court on Thursday issued an eight-day detention order against a 44-year-old man, a third-country national and convicted prisoner, in connection with the alleged attempted murder of a security guard and the arson of four vehicles belonging to a car rental company in Pyla on August 14.

Two other men have already been arrested in connection with the same case.

According to the police, the 44-year-old convict was arrested at dawn on Thursday. A search was carried out inside his prison cell under a judicial warrant and various items of evidence were seized.

The case concerns the alleged arson which took place at 4am on August 14, when four cars of a car rental company near the Pyla coast were set on fire.

Investigations carried out by the police and the fire department have since revealed that the cars had been set on fire by two people, who had approached the scene in a car and covered the vehicles with flammable material.

A security guard, who was patrolling the area, later reported to the police that he had heard several gunshots being fired, however no injuries have been reported.

Police are currently investigating footage from a closed-circuit surveillance footage from the area.

Two other suspects, aged 18 and 27, currently remain in custody in connection with the same case.

The first arrest in the case was made on August 21, when police arrested the 18-year-old suspect for his alleged involvement and the second arrest of the 27-year-old suspect was reported on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that the two suspects include a third-country national aged 27 and a European citizen aged 18. The case is being investigated by Larnaca CID.
