The foreign ministry on Thursday paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

“Today marks 24 years since the heinous terrorist attacks of 9/11,” the ministry said in a post on X.

We remember the thousands of innocent victims, the first responders, and all those whose lives have been affected in the most horrific way.

“Honouring their memory, we reaffirm our determination to stand together with the United States in the continuous fight against terrorism in all its forms.”

The September 11 attacks, also known as 9/11, were four coordinated Islamist terrorist suicide attacks by al-Qaeda against the United States in 2001.

Nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, two of which were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City and the third into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defence, in Arlington County, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in a rural Pennsylvania field during a passenger revolt.

Some 3,000 people lost their lives on the day.
