Total government employment in Cyprus reached 52,661 persons in August 2025, marking an increase of 209 individuals or 0.4 per cent compared with August 2024, according to the Statistical Service (Cystat).
Employment in the civil service fell by 0.9 per cent during this period, while the security forces recorded a sharper decline of 2.4 per cent.
In contrast, employment in the educational service rose by 5 per cent during this time.
Compared to August 2024, the most notable increase was among employees with contracts of definite duration, which rose by 8.3 per cent.
Conversely, the largest decrease was seen in employees with contracts of indefinite duration, down by 6.3 per cent.
According to the report, the educational sector showed the strongest growth, with definite-duration contracts climbing by 20.4 per cent.
On the contrary, the security forces registered a steep drop of 70.6 per cent in the same category, mainly due to the completion and non-renewal of specific contracts in July 2025.
For the period from January to August 2025, average total government employment increased by 0.8 per cent compared with the same period in 2024.
Government employment encompasses staff from the civil service, educational service, and security forces. The civil service includes employees working in ministries, departments, and services.
The educational service comprises staff of school units, the Cyprus Productivity Centre, and the Higher Hotel Institute of Cyprus.
The security forces cover personnel from the police service, fire service, and national guard.
Across all three categories, employees are classified as permanent staff, those with contracts of indefinite and definite duration, and hourly paid workers, including regular, casual, and seasonal staff.
