For the fifth year, the Association of Expatriates and Friends of Fini is organising a ppalouze-making event in the capital. Coming up this Sunday in a beautiful old neighbourhood, this free event will demonstrate how this traditional delicacy is made, offer tastings and showcase other traditional products for a day full of Cypriot character.
“We, the people of Fini, are coming to Nicosia to prepare our traditional Foiniotiko Ppalouze (grape must pudding) on-site, on Sunday, November 9, at 10.30 am, at the Lysarides Foundation in Ayioi Omologites,” say organisers.
Open to the public and with free entry, the event welcomes families, friends and local residents and will be attended and addressed by Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou, and Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos, under whose auspices the event is being held.
Throughout the event, ppalouze will be prepared live by master craftswoman Fanoula Vasiliou while around the venue other traditional products from Fini will also be available for purchase. Apart from fresh, warm ppalouze, there will be loukoumi from Fini, Cypriot coffee, clay pottery and an exhibition of traditional Fini ceramics by local potters.
“Fini is a village rich in history and tradition,” say organisers, “renowned across Cyprus and abroad for its pottery art (the famous Foiniotika pitharka – large jars, kouzes, stamnia and the ornate kouzouthkia – unique works of art), handcrafted wooden chairs, shepherds’ pouches (vourka), the Chantara Waterfall, the Monastery of Ayioi Anargyroi, its Venetian bridges (of Ekklisias, Piskopou, and Elias), and its unique Fini loukoumia. See you on Sunday!”
