Cyprus is often associated with beaches and sunshine, but the island also offers an extensive and diverse hiking network. Well-marked mountain paths, dramatic gorges, shaded forest trails, and scenic coastal walks make Cyprus an appealing destination for hikers of all experience levels.
From the cool pine forests of the Troodos Mountains to rugged sea cliffs and limestone gorges, each region offers distinct landscapes and hiking conditions. Below is a guide to some of the best hiking and mountain trails in Cyprus, including difficulty level, duration, best season, and key safety considerations.
In the Troodos region, the Artemis Trail (7.5 km) is one of the island’s most accessible mountain hikes. This circular route, classified as easy to moderate, takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and runs close to Mount Olympus, the highest point in Cyprus. The trail offers wide panoramic views and relatively gentle gradients, making it suitable for most hikers. It is best enjoyed from late spring to early autumn, although wind and colder temperatures are common at altitude.
Starting point: 300 metres from Chionistra exit on Troodos-Prodromos road

The Atalanti Nature Trail (14 km), also in the Troodos Mountains, is another popular loop. Taking around 4-5 hours, this easy to moderate hike passes through black pine forest and offers several viewpoints. Its shaded terrain makes it particularly suitable for summer hiking, while spring and autumn provide comfortable temperatures and clear visibility.
Starting point: Troodos main square
For a more scenic and varied mountain experience, the Caledonia Trail (3 km), follows a stream through dense vegetation and crosses small bridges and rocky sections. Rated moderate in difficulty, it typically takes close to 2 hours. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, as water levels are higher and the surrounding landscape is greener. Hikers should be cautious of slippery rocks, especially after rainfall.

Starting point 2: 500 m from Troodos square towards Platres

The Madari Circular Route (13 km) is aimed at more experienced hikers. This moderate to challenging loop takes between 3 and 5 hours and includes exposed sections with significant elevation changes. The trail offers some of the best views across central Cyprus but has limited shade, making autumn through late spring the safest and most comfortable seasons.
Starting point: Outside Kyperounda village at a point called Doxa si o theos (praise god)
Another Troodos forest route, the Prodromos – Zoumi Trail, is a moderate hike lasting approximately 2.5-3 hours. It runs through dense woodland and higher elevations, providing cooler conditions during summer months. Late spring to early autumn is the optimal time to hike this trail.
Starting point: Department of Forests children’s play area (close to Prodromos village square)
The Myllomeris Trail (1.2 km) is a shorter, easy to moderate walk leading to one of Cyprus’s tallest waterfalls. Taking around 1 hour, it is at its most impressive during winter and spring when water flow is strongest. Care is needed near the waterfall, as rocks can be wet and slippery.
Starting point: Head south towards Kato Platres from Pano Platres square for about 300 metres
On the western side of the island, the Avakas Gorge Trail (1.2 km) is one of Cyprus’s most dramatic natural hikes. This moderate route takes approximately 2.5 hours and winds through narrow limestone walls, uneven rock beds, and occasional shallow water. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer heat and winter flash-flood risk require careful planning.
Starting point: From Toxeftra Bay go east for almost 1 km
Cyprus also offers outstanding coastal hikes. The Konnos – Cyclops Cave Trail (1.7 km) is an easy to moderate walk combining ‘forest paths’ with sea views. Lasting about 1 hour it is best tackled from autumn to spring to avoid heat exposure. Rocky ground near the cave makes sturdy footwear essential.
Starting point: Konnos Bay parking area

Nearby, the Sea Caves – Agioi Anargyroi Trail (4 km) is an easy coastal route that takes around 1 to 1.5 hours. With open sea views and minimal elevation change, it is suitable for most hikers. The trail is best enjoyed in cooler months, as sun and wind exposure are constant.
