An anti-war demonstration is planned in Nicosia on Thursday to protest the recent US and Israeli drone strikes on Iran and military activity around Cyprus’ British bases, the Cyprus Peace Council announced on Wednesday.

It will take place at 5.30pm in front of the Presidential Palace

On Tuesday, an anti-war demonstration also took place in Limassol, with protesters calling for the removal of British military bases from Cyprus and condemning the US-led operations against Iran, which triggered retaliatory drone strikes against the island.

Cyprus Peace Council protesters at Limassol’s Molos amphitheatre held placards reading, “Out with the Bases. Out with all armies. What is Cyprus doing in imperialist wars?”

In a statement, the council condemned, “in the strongest possible way the new attacks by Israel and the US against Iran and the bombardment by that country across the Middle East and Cyprus.”

The council cautioned that attacks on and around Akrotiri only heighten tensions rather than offer solutions, urging the Cypriot government to insist that Britain withdraw from foreign military operations on the island.

“It would be catastrophic if Cyprus becomes a target of retaliation in a military attack foreign to its interests.”
