The German government appeals to all involved parties not to extent the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to Europe, but is currently not planning to provide military support to the island, German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said on Wednesday.
“The German government is of course in contact with its partners in Cyprus on the matter and shares the warnings issued by other European partners, who urge the parties involved and in particular Iran not to extend this conflict to European soil,” Cornelius said.
He reaffirmed that Berlin was carefully monitoring the situation and had been kept informed of all recent developments, including Monday’s Hezbollah drone attack, and does not rule out the likelihood of a change in circumstances at any time.
“Adequate measures have been taken within the framework of regional assistance and regional coverage and Nato territory,” he said.
Another German government spokesperson, who requested anonymity, on Wednesday morning confirmed to the Cyprus Mail that President Nikos Christodoulides and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call on the Iran war earlier in the week but declined to provide further comment on the matter.
“The discussion centred on the current situation in the Middle East. We will not disclose any further details,” they stated.
