A French frigate is off the coast of Cyprus, the French general staff said on Thursday.
In a post on X, the general staff said France was committed to supporting Cyprus in coordination with its European allies, after the attack on the island.
“European solidarity and commitment for regional stability,” it added.
On Tuesday, French president Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the frigate Languedoc was due to arrive in Cypriot waters, while also announcing that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle would be deployed to the region.
Meanwhile, Spain will send its Christopher Columbus frigate to Cyprus, joining France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and other Greek navy ships, the Defence ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The Spanish frigate, which will reach Crete around March 10, is used for air defence.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told parliament on Thursday that Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands will send naval assets to protect Cyprus in the coming days.
