Wizz Air UK has received the necessary permits to operate flights between the United Kingdom and the United States, the airline announced on Friday.
The regulatory approval allows the carrier to conduct flights on routes between the two countries following months of preparation and coordination with authorities.
Despite obtaining the authorisation, the airline stated that it has no plans to launch regular commercial flights to the United States.
Instead, the approval will allow the company to operate tailored charter flights for specific groups travelling between Europe and the US.
The airline said the authorisation could support European football teams and supporters travelling to the World Cup, as well as tour operators arranging organised trips.
“This is a proud and exciting day for everyone at our airline,” said Wizz Air UK managing director Yvonne Moynihan.
“Receiving approval to operate between the UK and the United States is a huge milestone for our company,” Moynihan added.
The company said it expects strong interest from football teams participating in the World Cup.
Beyond football travel, the airline said its charter services will also be available to corporate groups, tour operators, sports organisations and private travellers seeking transatlantic connections.
