A Greek Cypriot diver died after being found “in distress” near the Zenobia shipwreck off the Larnaca coast by the Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre (JRCC), it said on Saturday.

According to the JRCC, the man was rescued via speedboat by the port and maritime police and later transferred to an ambulance before being admitted to Larnaca general hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Zenobia is a Swedish ferry that capsised and sank near Larnaca in the summer of 1980.

Its remains have since remained underwater and emerged as an attraction to divers, with the wreck frequently ranked among the most prominent shipwrecks in the world.
