A Lakatamia residential building was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon after a fire erupted in the building’s elevator shaft, the fire department said on Wednesday.

According to the fire department, the fire was caused by waste materials which had been dumped in the elevator shaft, resulting in minor damage to the stairwell and a number of apartments in the building.

The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched
