The 28-year-old Azerbaijani man and his 27-year-old Estonian partner who were arrested over terrorism allegations in Cyprus have been deported to Estonia, local media reported on Friday.
The pair had been in arrested on suspicion of terrorism after allegedly monitoring and photographing Israeli properties in Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos and remained in custody for two weeks.
According to Philenews, the two were brought to Larnaca airport by the aliens and migration service on Thursday from where they boarded a plane to Estonia.
Soon after the pair were detained, police spokesman Vyron Vyronas said that the authorities had limited information about whether the two suspects had received external assistance or had associates in Cyprus.
He emphasised that police had not found any evidence that the two were acting on behalf of foreign intelligence services.
Citing police sources, Phile said that “confidential information” presented to the authorities indicated that the 28-year-old was an Iranian agent guided by the Revolutionary Guards.
He had reportedly travelled to Iran twice in 2025 and was photographed taking pictures of buildings of interest to Israel in Paphos and later travelled to Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos with the 27-year-old.
The pair were detained on February 27 and subsequently remanded in prison custody before a district court and later had their detention order extended before being deported on Thursday.
