This weekend, stories and songs of spring come to life in museums, independent films reach the big screen, new exhibitions open, community-focused zine-making parties appear, and lots of markets and car boot sales celebrate the season.

There is no shortage of events here, and we have selected what not to miss. Here’s what’s on this Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Performances

The weekend’s agenda begins with The Openest Mic XXII, an event by KENO Publications that celebrates World Poetry Day.

Held at Yalla Collective Space and Café in old Nicosia this Friday at 6.30pm, the event will present poetry readings by selected poets from around Cyprus, including Avgi Lily, Alexandros Chronides, Marios Georgiou, Dimitris Stratis, Constantinos Papageorgiou, Maria Tziaouri Hilmer, Andri Ioannou, Panagiota Zidili-Roz and Elena Pitsillidou.

A candlelit concert with pianist Denis Stelmakh is on at Pallas Theatre this Saturday, March 21, as the musician tours the island. Following his Limassol concert earlier this week, Stelmakh will present his cinematic neoclassical compositions this weekend in Nicosia with a rich repertoire of 15 works.

Also in Nicosia this Saturday is a charming event at the Hambis Municipal Museum of Printmaking in Nicosia. The Songs and Tales of Spring is an event of multiple celebrations – World Storytelling Day on March 20, World Poetry Day and the Spring Equinox on March 21.

To mark the occasion, Nicoletta Demetriou on vocals, Christina Polykarpou on lyra and Symeon Merkouris on lute will present Cypriot songs, poems and folk tales that celebrate the cycles of nature and humanity.

Film screenings

This weekend, independent and European cinema reaches the big screen. On Sunday, STYX Film Encounters continues its weekly cinema nights at Pantheon Cinema with the film Suspiria, part of its ‘Is it Magic?’ series.

Screened at 5.30pm, the 1977 supernatural horror film by Dario Argento will share with viewers the story of a young dancer named Suzie who travels to a prestigious ballet academy in Germany, where a series of violent events suggests that the institution is not what it appears to be.

In a completely different mood is the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus’s screening of the Greek film Stelios this Sunday, also at Pantheon Cinema.

As part of its Europe in Cinema film series organised by the EUNIC Cyprus Cluster in collaboration with the Friends of Cinema Society in Cyprus, the renowned 2024 film traces the life of the iconic Greek singer Stelios Kazantzidis.

The evening has free admission and will be followed by a wine reception after the 8.30pm screening.

Markets

Paphos hosts two exciting markets this weekend, first at Technopolis 20 this Sunday with a selection of vendors displaying their spring creations, handmade products and gifts, running from 10am to 4pm.

At the Annabelle Hotel, Bibliocosmos organises a Children’s Book Fair selling English-language books for young readers at low prices. The event will be on from 10am to 5pm.

In Nicosia, Misfit Sundays brings its Car Boot Sale back to Engomi’s industrial area, closing off the street for the day and filling it with 20 cars and their vintage finds.

Food, music from a DJ and lots of goods to browse will entertain visitors this Sunday between 11am and 6pm.

Exhibitions

The local art scene welcomes new exhibitions this week, starting with Andreas Paraskevas’ retrospective exhibition ‘Testimonies of an Unseen Time’.

The showcase will run at the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery from this Friday, March 20, to June 6, featuring paintings, stage design models and theatre costumes the artist has created from the 1980s to today.

In Paphos, Paris Christodoulou presents his Uneven Fields exhibition on 4 Agiou Kendea street, opening this Saturday evening, tracing the interwoven relationships between humans, landscapes, ecology and beyond.

Lastly, The Edit Gallery in Limassol hosts Danae Patsalou’s second solo exhibition at the gallery titled The Rise of the Sun, the Fall of Time.

It is a body of work that reflects on time, memory and renewal through the parallel imagery of sunrise and archaeological discovery, through a series of paintings and drawings.
