A 22-year-old convict was injured on Friday after being attacked by two other inmates at the central prisons.

In a statement issued by the justice ministry, the incident occurred at around 7.25pm under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Prison staff intervened immediately and “brought the situation under control”.

The injured man was transported by ambulance to Nicosia general hospital, where he received first aid treatment and was later kept in for observation as a precaution.

Authorities said the response was carried out without delay, with medical assistance provided promptly following the incident.

The prisons department informed the police immediately after the attack.

Officers attended the central prisons to examine the scene and begin taking statements as part of the investigation.

The ministry said the circumstances surrounding the assault are being examined, with efforts focused on determining how the incident unfolded and whether any additional factors contributed.
