Nicosia police said on Friday that they are investigating an assault which resulted in the injury of two men, one of whom has been admitted to hospital in critical condition.

A 23-year-old and a 21-year-old man were transferred by ambulance to the Nicosia general hospital late on Wednesday, saying that they were assaulted by a group of unknown persons at Solomou square around 10pm. The injured men said they were with two other people who were not taken to the hospital.

Police said the 23-year-old had to undergo an operation and is hospitalised in critical condition after suffering an open frontal skull fracture, as well as leg injuries.

The younger man suffered a severe head injury with his condition described as stable.

Police was informed about the incident on Thursday.
