A 22-year-old man from Paralimni was remanded for four days on Friday by the Famagusta district court as part of police investigations into a case of illegal possession of explosives and theft on April 14.

Famagusta police spokesperson Steve Theodoulou told the Cyprus News Agency that officers are currently dealing with many cases of illegal possession of explosives.

The 22-year-old was found in possession of explosives, ammunition, and pyrotechnics. His house was also searched, and police found several other dangerous items, such as 136 military and hunting cartridges, two harmful gas canisters, a stun gun, 23 smoke grenades, 60 fireworks and 216 Easter firecrackers.

In addition, officers found a total of €8,060 in cash, most likely earned after selling illegal explosives, according to Theodoulou.

On Wednesday, another 20-year-old man was arrested in Limassol after police officers found a total 498 Easter firecrackers in a bag on the back seat of his car.

The man was initially stopped for checks and handed over to officers a hand-rolled cigarette containing cannabis and tobacco, police said in a statement. Upon further checks, the bag with the firecrackers were also found.
