House president Annita Demetriou was in Poland on Wednesday, visiting refugee infrastructure along the border with Ukraine.
Demetriou was there as part of a group of women presidents of EU national parliaments at the invitation of the president of the lower House of the Polish parliament.
In statements to media, she said that the visit sent a message on the need to stop the war and was also a message of cooperation and of solidarity towards refugees.
Demetriou said that during the car ride to the border they were briefed on the accommodation procedures and the infrastructure that were set up for the refugees.
Authorities were worried about incidents of abuse and trafficking and they had to offer protection, she said.
Demetriou said it was important to witness the situation on the ground and to be able to speak with those who had lost their homes and loved ones.
“This is a way to really comprehend the extent of this atrocity,” she said, adding that Cyprus really understood the situation because it went through the Turkish invasion.
