Cypriot MEP Fidias Panayiotou submitted a parliamentary question to the European Commission regarding the rule of law in Cyprus and the dismissal of the auditor-general, according to a post on his social media.
The document shared by Panayiotou is dated 24 September. As the question has yet to be officially listed in the European Parliament’s register, it is expected to be processed in the coming days.
The question informs the European Commission about the case of Cyprus’ former Auditor-General Odysseas Michaelides, who was removed from his position by the Supreme Constitutional Court.
It mentions concerns that, according to Panayiotou, Michaelides may have been dismissed due to his well-known anti-corruption activities.
The question concludes by asking if the Commission would launch an official investigation into potential breaches of the rule of law in Cyprus concerning the removal of the former Auditor General, and if warranted, whether the Commission would propose infringement proceedings.
