Recent statements by a top UN official constitute yet more proof of the body’s commitment to efforts to resume the Cyprus negotiations within the UN framework, a government source has told the Cyprus News Agency.
Invited to comment on the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and Americas, Miroslav Jenca’s statements, the source said that they “are essentially in full alignment with what was discussed during the dinner on October 15 regarding the convening an expanded meeting and its composition”.
“It is yet more proof of the commitment of the UN and the secretary-general himself to the efforts to resume negotiations within the UN framework,” the source said.
Jenca said on Thursday that the UN secretary-general’s new initiative on Cyprus is likely to take place at the beginning of next year, adding that the expanded conference on Cyprus will include the guarantor powers.
According to an announcement by Cyprus’ House of Representatives Jenca was speaking at a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, with a delegation from the Subcommittee on External Relations of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), of which Cypriot MP, George Loucaides, is a member.
Jenča, the press release added, assured that the UN was committed to acting within the framework established by the resolutions on Cyprus regarding the content of the solution.
“He also noted that the secretary-general wants and seeks to prepare the new conference on Cyprus as best as possible so that it has increased chances of success.”
