Electricity tariffs in the north increased by almost 12 per cent on Tuesday, with people in the north now paying more for their electricity than people living in the Republic.
For residential properties paying the flat-rate tariff, the first 250 kilowatt hours or usage will now be charged at 4.8044TL (€0.12) per kilowatt hour, up from 4.3026TL per kilowatt hour.
The fee per kilowatt hour for usage between 251 and 500 kilowatt hours has increased from 8.8763TL (€0.22) to 9.9115TL (€0.24), while the fee per kilowatt hour for usage between 501 and 750 kilowatt hours has increased from 9.5442TL (€0.23) to 10.6573TL (€0.26).

The “peak” rate – between 5pm and 10pm – has increased from 12.2795TL (€0.30) per kilowatt hour to 13.7116TL (€0.33) per kilowatt hour, while the “off peak” rate – between 10pm and 7am – has increased from 5.8513TL (€0.14) per kilowatt hour to 6.5337TL (€0.16) per kilowatt hour.
In the Republic, consumers pay 10.35 cents per kilowatt hour as their “energy charge”, plus 3.05 cents per kilowatt hour for their network charge, and 0.65 cents per kilowatt hour for “ancillary services”.
Additionally, they pay 10.65 cents per kilowatt hour as a wholesale tariff and 7.34 cents per kilowatt hour for compulsory renewable energy purchases as part of the electricity authority (EAC)’s “analysis of energy charge”.
This means consumers in the Republic are paying around 32.04 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity used in addition to a 98-cent bimonthly meter data management charge plus a €6.08 bimonthly supply charge.
