Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas on Monday praised Cyprus’ special forces as “symbols of discipline, resilience and hope”, during a graduation ceremony at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Mari.

Speaking at the awarding of diplomas and insignia to the graduates of the 85th School of Underwater Demolitions, Palmas said the ceremony marked the end of an intense and demanding training period. He described the new frogmen as proof of the republic’s commitment to upgrading the National Guard and protecting Cyprus’ territorial integrity.

“Fifty-one years after the Turkish invasion, we remain firm in our goal of liberating our homeland,” Palmas said.

He stressed that Cyprus seeks peace and regional stability through strong bilateral and multilateral ties, while playing a growing role in eastern Mediterranean security. The minister warned that the world is going through a highly unstable period, marked by wars in Europe and the Middle East, threatening global peace. Against this backdrop, he said, Cyprus must remain alert and ready to defend its sovereignty.

“Our goal is to strengthen the National Guard, face modern challenges and ensure our people feel safe,” he added.

Addressing the graduates directly, Palmas told the young men they had earned their place among the elite.

“Only those with iron will and extreme endurance can serve in this unit,” he said.

“The insignia you wear from today are a badge of honour.”

He congratulated them for choosing a difficult path, one that follows the example of earlier generations who served with courage and dedication.

“You are now called to live up to their legacy, under any condition, at any moment,” he said.

The minister urged them to remember that success comes through hard work, discipline, and belief in their mission. He encouraged them to keep developing both body and mind as essential pillars of progress and happiness. Palmas closed his remarks by praising the leadership and instructors of the unit for their professionalism and tireless effort in preparing the next generation of special forces.

“The state will always stand by you,” he said.
