The United Nations secretary-general’s personal envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, is expected to visit the island from May 24 to 31 for a new round of contacts aimed at reviving peace efforts, a UN official has confirmed.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the visit is part of ongoing efforts to explore prospects for renewed negotiations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. During her stay, Holguín plans to meet the leaders of both communities, their representatives, and other key figures involved in the Cyprus issue.

“She is scheduled to be on the island from May 24 to 31 to meet with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, their representatives, and others engaged in the Cyprus process,” said Dujarric.

He added that after her meetings in Cyprus, Holguín also intends to hold talks with the three guarantor powers, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

The visit comes amid growing international concern over the prolonged stalemate in peace talks and follows Holguín’s previous efforts to assess the ground for restarting dialogue. Her return signals a continued commitment from the UN to support a negotiated solution to the decades-long division of the island.
