Pupils at the KB primary school in Limassol stayed away from lessons for two periods on Friday morning.
The action came after the parents’ association decided to protest against the delay in making the school’s installed air conditioning units operational. Parents and students gathered outside the school entrance, holding placards and voicing their frustration about the non-functioning air conditioning.
Despite a written assurance sent on Thursday by the Limassol school board, stating that the problem would be fixed by June 3, the parents chose not to cancel the planned boycott. The parents expressed deep disappointment, feeling their efforts and sacrifices have not received adequate recognition or support from the authorities. According to the school board, plans are expected to be submitted today to the electricity authority of Cyprus (EAC). The electrical installation will then undergo inspection, aiming for a fuse replacement on June 2 or June 3.
In a letter sent to both the parents and the school board, the parents’ association underlined their strong dissatisfaction with the air conditioning issue. They highlighted that, through their initiative and significant financial contribution from their fund and parents, the installation of units in all classrooms and common areas was completed with the school board’s approval.
The total investment has reached approximately €16,000 over the past two years. Unfortunately, despite finishing the installation works, the air conditioning units remain out of use due to the lack of electrical system upgrades at the school.
The parents stress that the situation, combined with the already high temperatures, makes the learning environment very difficult for the students.
