Military transport aircraft have arrived in Cyprus in the framework of Estia plan to evacuate war-torn areas in the Middle East, as friendly countries are requesting assistance in getting their people home.
Defence ministry spokesman Christos Pieris told the Cyprus News Agency that a small number of planes were already at Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos and Larnaca airport, but refrained from giving more details.
However, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas told CyBC that there were four US carrier planes at the air base, which arrived over the past few days.
These, he clarified, were not fighter jets but carrier aircraft for the transportation of people.
Palmas also referred to Cyprus’ role in the Israel-Iran conflict, saying it was “clearly humanitarian” and political at the same time.
He added that increased security measures have been taken at all levels.
In his statements to CNA, Pieris said Estia had been activated during unrest in Sudan and Lebanon and had proved the system works.
Cyprus, he said, is in a very important geostrategic position and can help people travel back home.
Pieris clarified that this was not a military operation, but humanitarian assistance.
He furthermore said the defence ministry was monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to keep the country and people safe.
