The Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) announced on Monday that it has received a €380,000 contribution from the Republic of Cyprus, bringing the country’s total donations to €4,392,700 since 2005.

This new donation will assist CMP’s operations in 2025, including the strengthening of excavation efforts and the recent establishment of an additional field team,” the CMP said in a statement.

The funds will also support the committee’s core mission: identifying and returning the remains of missing individuals to their families, “bringing an end to the uncertainty which has affected them for so many years.”

To date, the CMP has identified and returned the remains of 1,055 missing persons from both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, allowing for proper burials by their loved ones.

The CMP was established in April 1981 under the auspices of the United Nations, following an agreement between the two Cypriot communities and in response to calls made in two UN General Assembly resolutions.

Its project on the exhumation, identification, and return of remains became operational in 2006, with the European Union continuing to serve as its primary contributor.
