The health ministry reiterated a call for the responsible use of antibiotics on Tuesday, warning that Cyprus continues to struggle with high consumption rates and growing antimicrobial resistance.
The reminder coincides with European Antibiotic Awareness Day, marked annually on November 18, which this year focuses on From Resistance to Resilience: healthcare workers leading the change.
According to the ministry, antimicrobial resistance, when bacteria and other microorganisms survive treatment despite the use of antibiotics, remains one of the most pressing threats to public health. Resistant infections are associated with inflated medical costs, prolonged illness and increased mortality.
Cyprus faces an especially challenging situation due to the combination of elevated antibiotic consumption and rising rates of resistance. This trend underscores the need for coordinated action and improved public awareness.
The ministry stressed that antibiotics remain vital tools in modern medicine, but their effectiveness is being compromised by irresponsible or unnecessary use.
This includes taking antibiotics for viral infections, such as flu, for which they offer no remedial effect as antibiotics target bacteria, not viruses.
This year’s campaign reiterates the pivotal role of healthcare professionals in enforcing proper prescribing practices.
This includes not only safeguarding antibiotic effectiveness but also supporting the broader capacity of the healthcare system to manage infections and halt their spread.
Alongside appropriate antibiotic use, the ministry highlighted the importance of preventive measures.
Vaccinations, frequent handwashing, respiratory hygiene – also known as coughing etiquette – and maintaining clean environments all help reduce the likelihood of infections and ease the ever-growing strain on medical services.
Officials concluded that protecting the effectiveness of antibiotics is a shared responsibility. The healthcare system, medical staff, and the wider public all must play their respective roles in mitigating further resistance, the ministry said.
