The Sky Over Your Head Will Be Iron and the Ground Beneath You Copper is the title of a new exhibition set to open at Lumiere Art Gallery in Limassol on April 3. Welcoming four artists from Poland’s University of Art, the exhibition refers to both the name of the gallery and to one of the most significant historical natural resources of Cyprus – copper.
Participating artists Anna Krukowska, Alicja Panasiewicz, Tomasz Dobiszewski and Adama Panasiewicz present a project that reflects on the relationship between matter, landscape and cultural memory. Creating a space that exists between the blue horizon of the sea and sky and the earthy tones of the land’s surface, the exhibition shifts surfaces and chemical reactions, revealing that materials are not fixed, but constantly shifting over time.
“In the context of Cyprus,” organisers explain, “copper remains a key reference point. It has been part of the island’s history for thousands of years.” In the exhibition, copper appears in different forms – powder, metal sheets and brightly coloured compounds – highlighting its physical presence and the way it transforms.
The exhibition project treats artistic practice as a speculative form of research. Using materials like metal, paper, photography, objects and video, the artists present layers of work that reflect both long natural processes and human history, while also connecting to the present day.
Images, texts and references to Cypriot mythology are combined with both real and imagined photographs of familiar places, as well as maps of the island from different time periods. Rather than trying to prove what is true, the exhibition invites visitors to think about how truth is understood, and how certain images and stories come to shape our view of reality.
