The Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) on Thursday reported that retail trade turnover in Cyprus recorded a year-on-year increase in February 2026, reflecting continued growth in the sector.

Specifically, the Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade, which excludes motor vehicles, rose by 3.3 per cent in February 2026 compared with the same month in the previous year.

At the same time, the Turnover Volume Index of Retail Trade increased by 4.1 per cent year-on-year, indicating higher sales in real terms.

The figures show that both value and volume indicators of retail activity moved upward during the reference month.

Cystat explained that the Turnover Index of Retail Trade is designed to monitor short-term developments in the retail sector, offering insight into market trends.

According to the methodology, turnover comprises total invoiced amounts by enterprises during the reference period, reflecting market sales of goods and services.

These figures exclude value added tax but include other duties and taxes applied to goods.

The statistical service added that it gathers the data on a monthly basis through telephone enquiries and email communication with businesses.

Cystat further clarified that the index uses 2021 as the base year, meaning all changes are measured against the average monthly turnover of that year.

In the base year, the average index level is set at 100 units, providing a benchmark for comparison.

For example, a monthly index value above 100 indicates growth, with a figure such as 105.3 corresponding to a 5.3 per cent increase compared with 2021 averages.
