A fifth person was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a fight which broke out on Larnaca’s Finikoudes beach, police said.

The latest to be arrested is an 18-year-old male, and his arrest comes after three other males, one of whom is also 18 years old and the other two are 17 years old, were remanded in custody for four days earlier in the day.

They had been arrested on Tuesday, while the first to be arrested was a 17-year-old male who was arrested on Saturday night and remanded in custody for four days on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to CyBC radio on Wednesday morning, police spokesman Christos Andreou said the incident, which had lasted about 30 to 40 seconds, had resulted in minor property damage, but was not isolated.

Andreou clarified that the same people who had been previously convicted of petty offences, including thefts from beachgoers, had offended once again after release.

Investigations found that around 10 young people had “got involved without reasonable cause” with five third-country nationals, possibly tourists, who were dining in a restaurant nearby.

No injuries were reported, but chairs and tables at the restaurant were damaged.

The Larnaca municipality had said it was “intensely displeased” with the incident.

“Unfortunately, the measures determined did not prove effective and the same incidents unfolded,” it said.

Another 17-year-old boy had been hospitalised and required surgery after being involved in another fight on Finikoudes beach around a month ago.
